WHAT TO WEAR FOR FAMILY PHOTOS

What to Wear for Family Photos: A Photographer’s Guide

One of the most common questions I get before a family photo session is, “What should we wear?”

Choosing outfits for family photos can feel overwhelming, especially when you are trying to coordinate multiple people without looking too “matchy.” The good news is that your family does not need perfectly matching outfits to create beautiful, timeless photographs.

The goal is to choose clothing that feels like you, photographs well, and works together naturally.

Start With a Color Palette

Instead of choosing one color for everyone, select a palette of three to four coordinating colors.

Neutral tones are always a beautiful place to start. Cream, beige, camel, soft gray, navy, white, olive, and warm brown photograph beautifully and are easy to coordinate.

From there, you can add subtle pops of color through dresses, sweaters, accessories, or layers.

For example, a fall family session might include cream, camel, olive, and rust, while a spring session might feature soft blue, blush, ivory, and tan.

Coordinating looks much more natural in photographs than having everyone wear the exact same color.

Choose One Outfit First

If you are not sure where to begin, start with one person’s outfit and build everyone else’s clothing around it.

Often, Mom’s outfit is a great starting point. A dress with a subtle pattern or beautiful texture can establish the overall color palette for the family.

Once that outfit is selected, choose complementary colors and textures for everyone else.

Mix Textures and Layers

Texture adds depth and visual interest to photographs.

Think sweaters, linen, denim, knits, suede, corduroy, lace, or flowy fabrics.

Layers are also wonderful for photos. Cardigans, jackets, vests, scarves, and other simple layers can give an outfit more dimension without making it feel overly styled.

Avoid Too Many Busy Patterns

Patterns can absolutely work in family photos, but moderation is important.

Try having only one or two family members wear a pattern while everyone else wears coordinating solid colors.

Very small stripes, large logos, neon colors, character shirts, or extremely busy prints can sometimes distract from the people in the photograph.

The focus should always be on your family and the connection between you.

Think About Your Location

Your photo location can help guide your outfit choices.

For an outdoor session surrounded by trees and greenery, warm neutrals, creams, browns, navy, denim, and earthy tones often work beautifully.

For an urban or downtown session, you may want something a little more polished or contemporary.

For an indoor studio session, simple neutral clothing can create a clean, timeless look.

Your outfits do not need to blend into the location, but they should complement the overall environment.

Dress for the Season

Make sure your clothing feels appropriate for the time of year.

For fall family photos, sweaters, boots, layers, denim, and warm earth tones photograph beautifully.

Spring and summer sessions are perfect for lighter fabrics, soft colors, dresses, linen, and relaxed styles.

For colder months, layers are your friend. A beautiful coat, sweater, scarf, or boots can add warmth while still looking polished.

Most importantly, everyone should be comfortable. If your children are freezing, overheated, or uncomfortable in their clothing, it will usually show in the photos.

Don’t Forget Shoes

Shoes are easy to overlook, but they can make a big difference in your finished photographs.

Choose shoes that complement the outfit and location. Neutral boots, loafers, flats, clean sneakers, sandals, or simple heels often photograph well.

Try to avoid worn athletic shoes or anything that may draw attention away from the overall look.

Keep Accessories Simple

Accessories can help pull an outfit together, but they should not overpower it.

Simple jewelry, hats, belts, scarves, or hair accessories can add personality and texture.

For young children, avoid accessories they are likely to constantly remove or play with during the session.

Make Sure Everyone Feels Like Themselves

This may be the most important tip.

Your family photos should still look like your family.

If your husband never wears a blazer, family photos probably are not the time to force him into one. If your daughter loves dresses, let her wear a dress she feels beautiful in.

You want everyone to feel confident and comfortable.

The best photographs happen when people can relax, interact, laugh, and enjoy themselves rather than worrying about their clothing.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Gone are the days when everyone had to wear white shirts and matching jeans.

Instead, think about creating a cohesive look.

Your family’s outfits should feel like they belong together without looking identical.

When everything works together naturally, your photographs will feel more polished while still looking relaxed and authentic.

When in Doubt, Ask Your Photographer

You do not have to figure everything out on your own.
